Chess Festival Kicks Off
August 4 - The first annual
Blackstone Chess Festival
brings master minds from ten nations to compete in the
New England Masters
Monday, August 11. The opening reception is at 4pm. The
first round of the tournament starts at 6pm, at the
To Kalon Club, 26 Main St, Pawtucket RI.
Blackstone June Blitz Up Next
June 18 - The June Blitz takes place
Friday June 27, at the Blackstone Chess Academy.
It is a 4 round double-swiss, one game each color.
Time control is Game/7 (Game/5 with 2 second delay).
Entry fee is $7, or $5 for BCA members.
Prize fund $100. Free cookies! Not rated.
Blackstone Rapids Around the Bend
June 1 - The Blackstone Rapids is
Saturday, June 7, at the Blackstone Chess Academy.
It is a 4 round swiss, dual rated event. USCF membership is required.
Time control is Game 35 with a 10 second delay,
if no delay clock is available, Game/45.
Entry fee is $50 at the door. Last chance for advance entry
is at the BCA Friday: $40 for members, $45 non-members (IM/GM free).
Prize fund $1500. In two sections, Open and Under 1800.
Registration ends 10:15am.
Lunch is available on site from 1:30-3:30, sandwiches, salads, burgers.
Beverages are available throughout the day. Books and chess merchandise
will be on sale by Chess Books From Europe.
Boston Blitzer Blitzes Blackstone Blitz
May 16 - Jorge Sammour-Hasbun took the Blackstone Chess Academy May Blitz,
with a score of 7.5-0.5. Not far behind at 6.5-1.5 was Carlos Avalos,
the champion of the Cranston-Warwick Chess Club. Daniil Mosiyenko
and David Harris shared third place at a respectable 6-2. The results
are now posted on the
May Blitz Crosstable.
Jorge began the evening with an illuminating chess lecture.
After the lecture, Tomas Ramirez presented a poster
in honor of Jorge's Dos Hermanas victories.

Champions Prevail at Blackstone Blitz
April 24 - Dos Hermanas ICC Blitz champion
Jorge Sammour-Hasbun took top honors at the
first Thursday Blitz at the Blackstone Chess Academy. The new
Rhode Island Champion Miro Reverby finished second, his only
losses coming at the hands of Jorge. Ryan Chin placed a respectable
third, just a "chin" behind the top dogs.
This event was a 4 round Swiss, two games per round. The time control
was five minutes, with a two second delay. There were three Masters
and two Experts in the ten player field. The top three received
prizes of $50, $30, and $20 respectively. Everyone got cookies.
Blackstone Chess Announces Blackstone Chess Festival
Mar. 12 - Blackstone Chess announces the Blackstone Chess Festival,
August 11-17, 2008. The festival will feature the first FIDE tournament
in Rhode Island, the New England Masters, and the
Blackstone Chess Festival Open.
The New England Masters
is a FIDE rated 9 round Swiss open to players with a FIDE rating
of at least 2100. The first round is 6:00pm Monday, August 11,
followed by two rounds per day Tuesday through Friday. This is
an excellent chance for attaining GM
and IM norms. See the

The Blackstone Open is a 4 round Swiss taking place over the
weekend of August 16-17th. Details will be announced in the
near future. Free entry for IM or GM, only $50 to participants
in the Masters with advance entry.
Feb. 25 - Blackstone Chess Academy announces a
Grand Opening and Open House on Wednesday, March 12 , at 7 pm.
Chess enthusiasts are invited to see the new chess center
in Pawtucket, RI, at the To Kalon Club, 26 Main St.
Jan. 31 - The location of the home of the Blackstone Chess Academy
was unveiled this evening at a reception at the To Kalon Club, the host
of this new chess center in Pawtucket, RI. The To Kalon Club is
at 26 Main Street, a block east of downtown.
Jan. 15 - The Blackstone Chess Academy announces the
creation of a chess center serving the Blackstone
Valley community. The chess center features
a club, USCF rated tournaments,
special events, and other special programs.
