Modern Chess developed from the Indian game Shatranj, played on the same board, with identical pieces. A game of Shatranj could just as easily take place on the 64 2¼ inch squares of this 20 inch square beauty.
This beast is almost one inch thick. The underside of this board is lined with green felt, not just the 4 little dots of felt seen on most boards. The wood has an earthy grain, the borders contrast nicely with the playing squares, reflective glare is minimal. A pleasure to play chess or Shatranj on.
